Daytona Beach resident wins Speedway singing contest
Even though all 11 finalists in Daytona International Speedway's "Straightaway to Stardom" singing contest sang the National Anthem, Johnny Mayo had what it took to stand out in the crowd on Saturday.
And by standing out, Mayo now gets the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the Winn-Dixie 250 race presented by PepsiCo on July 6th before more than 100,000 race fans at "The World Center of Racing."
"I want to thank my sister (Lucinda Mayo) for me without my knowing it," said Mayo who out-sang 10 other finalists to reach the finals which were held in Gatorade Victory Lane at DIS. "I am very excited. I never won anything before in my life. I just feel this is the beginning of my overflowing of blessings."
"What a great voice," said DIS Director of Communications Julie Giese, one of six judges on hand including last year's winner Tiffany Thomas of Palm Coast. "We're excited to add Johnny to our list of outstanding entertainment during the Pepsi 400 Weekend."
Mayo's road to victory began three weeks ago at Volusia Mall where 75 contestants sang in hopes of making the cut. The field was narrowed down to 25 in the second round which was held in DAYTONA USA, followed by a cut to what was initially supposed to be 10. However, because of a tie in scoring, 11 contestants were invited back to vie for the title in the 3rd edition of the event.
Teaming with Black Crow Broadcasting and Volusia Mall, in addition to singing at the Busch Series Winn-Dixie 250 Presented by PepsiCo, Mayo will also receive credentials for themselves and three guests for the Winn-Dixie 250 presented by PepsiCo NASCAR Busch Series Race, tickets for four to the Brumos Porsche 250 race on Thursday, July 5 and four tickets to the Pepsi 400 on Saturday, July 7. The grand prize winner will also receive a $250 CBL Malls gift card courtesy of Volusia Mall.
