DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 20, 2008) – The University of Utah Runnin’ Utes college basketball team took a team building trip to historic Daytona International Speedway Thursday morning to experience the excitement of NASCAR.
The Utes, in town for the Glenn Wilkes Classic college basketball tournament at the Ocean Center, visited Daytona 500 Experience – “The Official Attraction of NASCAR” and Daytona International Speedway and participated in the Chevy 16-Second Pit Stop simulation, pace car rides and a tour of the historic racing facility.
“It’s bigger than I imagined,” said senior guard Lawrence Borha of the 480-acre motorsports facility. “Seeing it on TV, it doesn’t look this big.”
During the 16-Second Pit Stop Challenge, the team broke up into three groups of five players. The winning group got their pit stop time well under 20 seconds.
Following the pit stops, the team proceeded inside DIS for the tour and pace car rides.
“180 mph around this track, I couldn’t imagine doing that,” Borha said. “125 mph was fast enough for me.”
The team used the field trip to DIS as a team building exercise in advance of this weekend’s Glenn Wilkes Classic, where they will play Mississippi and Morgan State.
