NASCAR Legend Rusty Wallace Delivers NASCAR Day Surprise To Sixth Grade Students

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR legend and NASCAR Foundation board member Rusty Wallace surprised sixth-grade students from Hinson Senior Middle School today with news that they have been selected to participate in the Bank of America “Students at the Speedway” program at Daytona International Speedway on NASCAR Day – May 21.
Wallace delivered the news that a total of 100 students from Hinson, Indian Trail Middle, Buddy Taylor Middle and Campbell Middle will spend NASCAR Day participating in a variety of activities designed to show students the critical role that science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) play in the sport of NASCAR racing.
• An interactive financial demonstration of how math can be applied to the operations of a race team
• A guided tour around the track and infield by a NASCAR expert who explains how teams must apply STEM in developing their strategies (ex. track banking, refueling strategy, drive lines, etc.)
• A variety of interactive stations using a remote control car track to demonstrate how STEM principles define the world of motorsports
“The stations are designed to really hit on all the key ways that we use the STEM subjects, especially math, to put a race car on the track every weekend,” said Wallace. “I had a blast today surprising the students and hope that they’ll see all the potential career opportunities within the motorsports industry for someone with a strong background in these four subjects.”
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, fewer American students are graduating from college with math and science degrees than ever before. The Students at the Speedway program is designed to help increase interest in these subjects by bringing the concepts of STEM to life by applying them to NASCAR racing.
“It’s our goal to show students a fun side of learning critical subjects like math and science through the sport of NASCAR,” said Sam Willett, Bank of America Daytona Beach market president. “Bank of America has invested more than $20 million during the past two years in educational activities, and through these programs we are helping students develop important financial literacy skills.”
The NASCAR Foundation and Bank of America, the Official Bank of NASCAR, will also provide each participating school with a STEM curriculum kit and a Fast Track remote control car set and tickets for each student to the Coke Zero 400 on July 3 at Daytona International Speedway.
The event on May 21 will conclude with the students participating in a NASCAR Day community celebration at the Daytona 500 Experience. The event is being held to commemorate the past and current efforts of the Daytona Beach community which raised more than $100,000 through its participation in NASCAR Day last year.
NASCAR Day is an annual charitable celebration of the NASCAR spirit that enables fans and corporate partners to join together to make a difference in the lives of children. Since it began in 2004, NASCAR Day has raised nearly $8 million for charity.
The Daytona Beach project is one of five keystone events to take place on NASCAR Day aimed at helping children live happier, healthier lives. The “Big Five” projects include: partnering with Bank of America for a racing-themed educational initiative at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.; renovation and race theme decoration of a portion of the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service in Atlanta; working with Sprint, Inc. for a playground build at the Kansas City Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City, Mo.; A Place for Hope project outside Charlotte, N.C. and a fundraiser at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. to support Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.
