NASCAR Veteran Kenny Wallace To Compete In The 2011 Rolex 24 With TRG Racing

Kenny Wallace has made only one previous Rolex 24 start back in 1993.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Popular NASCAR Nationwide Series veteran Kenny Wallace is the first non-Rolex Series regular to announce his intentions to compete in the 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona.  He will be joined by Rolex 24 veterans Ron Yarab, Daniel Graeff and Pierre Bourque in TRG's Racing4Research Porsche GT3.

Wallace will also test with the team at Daytona in the Jan. 7-9 Roar Before the Rolex 24, the first scheduled event on newly repaved superspeedway.

The Racing4Research program was developed by the Children's Tumor Foundation to benefit neurofibromatosis (NF) research through corporate sponsorship, personal donations and individual fund raising. Each lap the Children's Tumor Foundation team completes raises funds for critical research and patient support at more than 40 NF Clinics nationwide, and brings awareness to the importance of the cause.

"First of all, this is about the Children's Tumor Foundation," Wallace said. "I was real happy to meet Rob Yarab and some of their people while I was racing my Federated Auto Parts dirt car in Sharon, Ohio. They sent me a real nice package and I was really touched; this is a good cause. I was really gratified and humbled when they offered me a seat in the Rolex 24.

"That's the main reason why I'm involved, but the second reason is because I'm a competitor and I felt, ‘Wow, I can get in a TRG Porsche,'" Wallace added. "Kevin Buckler and the guys at TRG put together really good equipment."

This will be Wallace's second attempt in the Rolex 24. He ran in the 1993 event in an independent Camaro, finishing 16th in the GTS class after the car he shared with Paul Mazzacane and Chester Edwards retired with engine failure.

"Felix Sabates called and asked me to do it, so I did it for Felix," Wallace recalled. "I didn't even know the other guys on the team - that's how quick it came about."

TRG scored three GT victories in the Rolex 24 since 2002, including an overall triumph in 2003. Wallace is expected to be joined by many stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and other major forms of racing in the 49th running of the classic on Jan. 29-30 at Daytona International Speedway.

"A big reason why I'm looking forward to running the TRG Porsche is this will be the first time that I drove a real road course car," Wallace said. "I'm really looking forward to this. I even cancelled a few of my dirt races in Tuscon, Ariz., to test, because I want to make sure I'm not a weak link. I'm looking forward to learning how to do everything properly. I'm also excited because - coming off the holidays - I look forward to getting on the high banks to prepare me for next season."
