BROOKLYN, Mich., and DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A friendly holiday food drive competition between Michigan International Speedway and Daytona International Speedway resulted in two local communities receiving thousands of food items just in time for the holiday season.
The Drive for Hunger competition between MIS and DIS, which was held throughout the past week, saw hundreds of race fans, speedway employees and staffs of Americrown and Competition Tire, donate food items for the event with CCIS Brooklyn Food Pantry in Michigan and Second Harvest and Salvation Army of Central Florida receiving large donations of food for the holidays.
In fact, the food delivery by MIS, which took place on Tuesday, was the single largest donation the CCIS Food Pantry in Brooklyn has ever received. Some 18,280 pounds of food was collected between the two tracks.
Oh yeah, and Daytona won the competition between the two tracks with 13,000 pounds of food collected to MIS’ 5,280. With Daytona receiving more pounds of donated food, employees of the track will receive lunch courtesy of MIS and bragging rights until next year.
It wasn’t about the friendly competition between MIS and DIS, but rather the people in need this holiday.
“It was a fun and rewarding competition,” MIS President Roger Curtis said. “To be able to say that we made the single largest donation to our local CCIS Brooklyn Food Pantry puts a big smile on all the employees here at MIS, Americrown and Competition Tire. We did a great thing for our community and I would like to personally thank all the race fans and employees that made this food drive a success.”
“Everyone wins with this competition,” said DIS President Joie Chitwood III. “We would like to thank all of our employees as well as the entire community for uniting together to help families during the holiday season.”
MIS started off with local Brooklyn Elementary School making a sizable food donation of over 2,100 items. The speedway received more donations throughout the week from race fans stopping by the Administration Building to give to the cause.
The Track Drive for Charity concluded the giving period for MIS, which took place Saturday. The track drive netted more than a thousand food and toy items, filling a full sized semi-truck trailer and cube truck courtesy of Competition Tire. The track drive gave race fans the opportunity to take a lap with their personal vehicle around the track in exchange for a food or toy item. Toys were donated to the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign, and not included in the final weight tally.
Todd Young, of Toledo, Ohio, attended the MIS track drive and donated a food and toy item for the event. Young has attended NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at MIS since 2002, but this was his first opportunity to take a lap around MIS in his personal vehicle. Young also won a drawing for two tickets to the MIS Champions Club for the June Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 race weekend in 2011. All track drive participants were entered into the random drawing.
“I wanted to attend the track drive last year but couldn’t. This year, I said I was going to make it for sure,” Young said. “It was my first time taking my car out on the track and it was very fun. The whole event was a tremendous experience and it was for a good cause, which made it even better.”
To drive food donations at the “World Center of Racing,” Daytona International Speedway offered free admission to the new All-Access Tour to race fans that brought at least three (3) cans of food to the DIS ticket office counter on Dec. 3-4.
In addition, Daytona International Speedway hosted the WESH-TV “Share Your Christmas” food drive on Monday, Dec. 6 which benefited the Salvation Army and Second Harvest.
