Groundbreaking takes place DIS-sponsored Halifax Habitat for Humanity Womenbuild House
Groundbreaking ceremony takes place for the Halifax Habitat for Humanity Womenbuild House at Flomich Woods
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.— Daytona International Speedway and Halifax Habitat for Humanity (Halifax HFH) announced plans for the affiliate’s 4th WomenBuild home to be sponsored by the “World Center of Racing.” The ceremonial groundbreaking for the build took place on Monday, March 21.
DIS has a long tradition of charitable support of Halifax HFH through fundraising opportunities and employee volunteers. Since 2008, the affiliate raised funds during the Speedweeks and Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola events to support more than 60 percent of the costs of this new construction. DIS received the affiliate’s “Spirit of Hope Award” in 2010 to acknowledge their support of the Habitat mission as well as their significant support of families and children in need throughout Volusia County.
“Daytona’s contribution has certainly provided a significant opportunity for this family in need but we still need some additional community support to complete this project,” said MaryEllen Osterndorf, Esq. , Board President Halifax HFH. “This is a great opportunity for other community partners to join this effort and provide this family in need with a home of their own.”
The build will take place at Flomich Woods, an affordable housing development that is a public-private partnership with the City of Daytona Beach. The local National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and the Volusia Women’s Network group have already committed support as Community Partners.
WomenBuild is a project of Habitat for Humanity International and the concept is to encourage women and women groups to participate with Habitat affiliates as volunteers on the construction site. Halifax HFH has successfully completed three previous WomenBuild projects in the Halifax area. The local affiliate celebrated their 25th Anniversary on March 17th and plans for several special events to honor their homeowner families, volunteers and supporters during 2011.
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing mission that encourages people of all faiths and backgrounds to work with families in need to build quality, affordable housing.
