With the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola just over a month away, we’re taking a look at recent race champions who you should be following. We continue the series with 2014 Coke Zero 400 champion Aric Almirola.
Aric Almirola @aric_almirola
Race Team: Richard Petty Motorsports
Car: No. 43 Smithfield Ford Fusion
Running the iconic No. 43 with the U.S. Air Force on the hood for July Fourth weekend, Almirola's 2014 Coke Zero 400 win came on the 30th anniversary of team owner Richard Petty's 200th Cup Series victory in the 1984 Coke Zero 400. It was also the first time since 1999 that Petty's famed car was in Gatorade Victory Lane at any racetrack.
That win was the first in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Almirola, a Tampa, Fla. native, and saw the race shortened for only the second time in event history.
At the 2016 Coke Zero 400, his fifth career attempt in the event, Almirola will look to get his first win of the season and put Richard Petty Motorsports back in Gatorade Victory Lane in the Independence Day weekend classic.
• Almirola was just 112 days old when Richard Petty scored his 1984 Coke Zero 400 victory
• Almirola is the only Sprint Cup driver other than Petty to win in the No. 43 at DAYTONA
