Speedweeks 2016 was one for the ages. With the closest finish in the 58 years of the Great American Race and a sold-out crowd on-hand to witness history in a newly-renovated $400 stadium; drivers, owners, celebrities, personalities and YOU, our fans, had plenty to say about the remarkable ten day spectacle.
On winning the DAYTONA 500:
“This is the best … I mean, it’s just the best. It’s the biggest race of my life. The DAYTONA 500 … as a kid it’s what you [dream of winning] – this is the pinnacle of our sport and I’m just proud to be here.”
On winning the NextEra Energy Resources 250:
“Man, I was so pumped up. I knew that this truck had speed. I knew we had raw speed. This was unbelievable because this is a hard race to win.”
On winning the DAYTONA 500 pole:
“This is a big day, but this is a long week. I’m just very honored and blessed to be with the group of guys that we have. I think it’s a special group. This entire team did such a good job on this car during this off-season. It’s awfully fast.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
On winning the Can-Am Duel:
“We got another win at Daytona for the Earnhardts, so we added to the legacy. We’re up in the 50s now, with all the wins we have.”
On being at the DAYTONA 500: “The atmosphere is blowing me away…Arriving here today to the stadium, what an aura and atmosphere. I’m really excited.”
On being at the DAYTONA 500:
“Being at DAYTONA, it’s a race that transcends the race, the entity and the business. It’s a destination. It’s truly an honor to be part of this.”
On winning the DAYTONA 500:
“The thrill in football, you can't get any more excited than that, winning a Super Bowl. It's the same thrill over here. Most people never get to have a dream in life. I've had two from an occupational standpoint. I'm probably one of the most blessed guys in the world.”
Martin Truex Jr.
On the DAYTONA 500 finish:
“I did all I thought I could do. I had the lead. I probably should have run him up a little more, just lost in the last second. … Really proud of everybody. Really proud of the teamwork with the JGR guys. We're team players, and we're in it for the long haul with them. Congrats to Denny. He beat me by a couple of feet.”
On Denny Hamlin’s win: “If I can’t win, I want my teammate to win. That’s what being teammates is all about, to get everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing running good. We did that today. Those guys got the finish and I didn’t, unfortunately.”
Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley
On returning home:
“It’s 100 percent a dream come true to be on a completely different end of it. For four years in high school, playing for the Seabreeze Sandcrabs baseball team, we sold merchandise in a little trailer to raise money for the team. Doing that for four years, coming to the races as a fan, and then coming back to entertain and play some of our songs. The energy here is undeniable. It’s unlike anything else. We’re so excited. It feels good to be home. It’s a beautiful day.”
