Koralis Entertainment is bringing eSports to the “World Center of Racing” on November 4, 2017 with the first destination event of its popular MIDWEEK THROWDOWN online series. The ‘Daytona $5k Throwdown’ will feature a 128-player Street Fighter V tournament. The event is the first of its kind to be held at Daytona International Speedway.
Under its 2050 eSports moniker, Koralis Entertainment has produced eSports events in Daytona Beach in 2015, and Chattanooga in 2016 and is returning to Daytona Beach, believing the storied motorsports venue to be a perfect fit for its 2050 eSports brand.
“If you look at all of the events the new Speedway stadium can accommodate, it is a natural home for eSports,” said Heath Jones, CEO of Koralis Entertainment. “Along with the world-class motorsports events, the Speedway has hosted mixed martial arts, concerts and even NBC’s American Ninja Warrior, so eSports is a perfect fit for such a magnificent venue. Importantly, there is room to grow.”
Gaming events across various titles and platforms have become a multi-billion-dollar industry as the Entertainment Software Association estimates that more than 155 million Americans play video games. The eSports industry is experiencing a boom as millions have taken to competitive gaming in both professional and amateur ranks.
“You can see by its tremendous growth that eSports is here to stay,” Jones added. “Fortune 500 companies are investing in sponsorships in support of professional teams, while universities globally are offering both scholarships to eSports players, and courses designed to teach eSports production. I think that is truly the tipping point for the industry.”
For Daytona International Speedway, eSports represents a continuation of their evolution as the first-of-its kind, multi-use motorsports stadium.
“We have proven we can provide a world-class facility for a wide variety of events,” said Chip Wile, President of Daytona International Speedway. “We are excited to welcome 2050 eSports and can’t wait to see how the gaming community responds.”
The 2050 eSports Daytona $5k Throwdown takes place Saturday, November 4, 2017, inside the Infield Media Center at Daytona International Speedway. The Street Fighter tournament is open to any players and there is no entry fee. All of the action will be broadcast live from the “World Center of Racing” on Twitch.tv and Facebook Live.

About Daytona International Speedway.
Daytona International Speedway is the world’s only motorsports stadium and was awarded the SportsBusiness Journal’s prestigious Sports Business Award for Sports Facility of the Year in 2016. Daytona International Speedway is the home of "The Great American Race” – the DAYTONA 500. Though the season-opening Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event garners most of the attention – as well as the largest audience in motorsports – the approximately 500-acre motorsports complex, also known as the “World Center of Racing,” boasts the most diverse schedule of racing on the globe. In addition to at least nine major event weekends, the Speedway grounds are also used extensively for events that include concerts, civic and social gatherings, car shows, photo shoots, production vehicle testing and police motorcycle training.
