DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Race fans produced record results during the recent sixth annual 9-11 Blood and Marrow Drive held Saturday, Sept. 10 at historic Daytona International Speedway.

In partnership with Florida’s Blood Centers, the year’s blood drive, which marked the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11, was staged at the Daytona 500 Club in the infield of the Daytona International Speedway.

The 12-hour blood drive generated 1,064 registered donors and 829 units of blood – a 30% increase. Since the event’s inception, growth in donor participation has increased every year.

Each guest who donated received a ticket to the 2012 Subway Jalapeno 250 Powered By Coca-Cola NASCAR Nationwide Series race and a free commemorative T-shirt.

With the continued success of the blood drive, all donors were also entered to win two Daytona 500 Club ticket packages for the 2012 Daytona 500 and two Daytona 500 Club packages for the 2012 Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola.

Sep 15 | Lola T70 Chevrolet that propelled Penske to first Rolex 24 triumph will join the 50th Anniversary overall champions display

The No. 6 Lola T70 Chevrolet driven to victory in the 1969 Rolex 24 At Daytona by Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons will join the display of past overall Rolex 24 At Daytona championship cars at the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 6 Lola T70 Chevrolet fielded by legendary car owner Roger Penske and driven to victory in the 1969 Rolex 24 At Daytona by Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons will join the display of past overall Rolex 24 At Daytona championship cars to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the twice-around-the-clock challenge on January 28-29.

The victory was the first for Chevrolet in an international endurance race and also the first time Penske celebrated a triumph at Daytona International Speedway.

The No. 6 Lola T70 Chevrolet joins the growing field of prestigious championship cars in the display:

• The No. 96 Arciero Racing Lotus-Climax 19B  from the inaugural Rolex 24 (then known as the Daytona Continental) in 1962
• The Porsche 907 from the 1968 Rolex 24
• The No. 98 Toyota Eagle from the 1993 Rolex 24
• The Preston Henn Porsches from the 1983 and 1985 Rolex 24s.

Additional cars will be announced in the coming months as they are secured to be part of this one-of-a-kind display.

Race strategy was the key to victory in the 1969 Rolex 24 for the No. 6 Lola T70 of Donohue and Parsons, who was a last-minute replacement in the car for injured Ronnie Bucknum. Entering the race, Penske believed the difference in winning would be attrition and directed his drivers to run a conservative pace.

Penske made the right call.

Despite the No. 6 Lola T70 experiencing a wide-range of problems from a fuel pick-up issue to exhaust system and starter motor failures, Penske’s drivers were the last men standing as accidents and mechanical failures took out the pre-race favorites such as the Porsche 908s and Ford GT40s.

Despite having to spend a combined two hours, 10 minutes and 12 seconds in the pits on 31 stops, the No. 6 Lola T70 won by a margin of 30 laps and covered 626 laps, 2,382.63 miles.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona, the kick-off event to Speedweeks 2012 as well as the international motorsports calendar, showcases the world’s best drivers competing against each other lap after lap for 24 hours on Daytona International Speedway’s challenging and demanding 3.56-mile road course.

The Audi R8 LMS race car is expected to make its competition debut at the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 28-29, 2012.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Audi has announced its commitment to build a version of its successful R8 LMS race car for the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, adding another major manufacturer to its highly competitive production-based GT class. GRAND-AM has worked with Audi on the project since August 2009, making several visits to Germany to meet with the manufacturer. The car is expected to begin testing in the fall, with its competition debut expected at the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 28-29, 2012.

The announcement follows the successful first test of the Ferrari F458 as GRAND-AM seeks to bring new cars and manufacturers into the Rolex Series’ GT class while bringing passionate fans to the tracks and continuing to enhance the standard of competition.

“This is another important step forward for the Rolex Series and the GT class,” said GRAND-AM Vice President of Competition Dave Spitzer. “We know there is incredible support for Audi among our race fans, and we look forward to hearing and seeing the beautiful R8 racing with the rest of our GT class.

“With Audi, we have developed a template for modifying GT cars to our performance level that can be applied elsewhere to further enhance the variety on our grid.”

The Rolex Series Audi R8 will use the 5.0-liter V10 engine and Audi’s production-based aluminum chassis. Engine power and aerodynamic performance will be modified slightly to match current Rolex Series GT performance levels. Work is underway to test the engine on GRAND-AM’s dyno. Cars may be delivered to customers this fall.

“We are proud to join the Rolex Series in 2012 with the R8,” said Romolo Liebchen, Audi Project Manager Customer Sports GT. “We know the GRAND-AM team will provide a great platform for GT racing for years to come. We look forward to meeting many new customers.”

Liebchen is expected to attend the Rolex Series’ season-ending race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in September to meet with GRAND-AM officials, teams and prospective customers.

Teams will have the opportunity to test the new Audi at open tests at Daytona International Speedway in November and December. The 2012 Rolex Series season opens with the annual Roar Before the Rolex 24 At Daytona test in early January, leading up to the 50th Rolex 24 on Jan. 28-29.

Tickets for the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 are available online at http://www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.
