Kurt Busch held off a hard-charging pack of competitors to take a green-white-checkered win in Friday night’s Subway Jalapeno 250 Powered By Coca-Cola NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

Kurt Busch

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Kurt Busch held off a hard-charging pack of competitors to take a green-white-checkered win in Friday night’s Subway Jalapeno 250 Powered By Coca-Cola NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

“We brought it home to Victory Lane at Daytona,” an emotional Busch said. “That there is a statement – that’s what (owner) James Finch is all about. He loves Daytona and I’m happy that we were able to deliver. All of (the crew) came out to the start/finish line to be a part of the celebration. It’s all about heart, and it’s all about passion with these guys and I couldn’t be more proud of this team effort tonight.”

Pushing Busch to the win was pole-sitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr., followed by Michael Annett.

“(Kurt) was fast all night and I just pushed him to the win,” Stenhouse said. “I was hoping I could make a move there, but I saw the No. 3 car and everybody coming, so I tried to duck out and block them and we ended up second. It was a fun race.”

Busch, who has seven second-place points finishes at the “World Center of Racing,” and two non-points wins, explained the reason for the bright orange car that he nicknamed, “The Great Pumpkin.”

“There’s no other guy that gets as excited for Daytona as James Finch,” Busch said. “He wanted his cars orange so that they could be seen up front and so that the car could be recognized without a sponsor on it. We drove an unsponsored car into Victory Lane tonight.”

The race produced a new track record for lead changes (42) in NASCAR Nationwide Series competition at Daytona among 16 drivers. The 43-car field included six drivers that will pull double duty this weekend and participate in Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola.

Friday night’s race also served as the qualifier in the “Dash 4 Cash” bonus program as the top four drivers to receive NASCAR Nationwide Series driver championship points, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Michael Annett, Austin Dillon and series points leader Elliott Sadler, will carry the “Dash 4 Cash” designation in the first race of the bonus program on July 14.

Jul 06 | Matt Kenseth Captures Pole for the 54th annual Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola

After 58 career starts at Daytona International Speedway, two-time Daytona 500 champion Matt Kenseth captured his first pole on the 2.5-mile tri-oval with a 192.386 mph lap during qualifying for Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola.

Matt Kenseth

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- After 58 career starts at Daytona International Speedway, two-time Daytona 500 champion Matt Kenseth captured his first pole on the 2.5-mile tri-oval with a 192.386 mph lap during qualifying for Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola.

“I’ve never won a superspeedway pole,” said Kenseth, who has now qualified for the 2013 Daytona Shootout. “It’s great to be on the pole – it puts us in the Shootout for next year. You like to be in all the special races. There’s been a couple of years where I missed the Shootout and whenever you’re not in (it), you feel like you didn’t do your job as good as you should; you feel like you should be in the special races.”

With Kenseth’s pole, Roush Fenway Racing continues their dominance in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at the “World Center of Racing” that goes back to David Ragan and Kenseth’s 1-2 finish in last year’s Coke Zero 400. That string of success continued into 2012 when Kenseth won his Gatorade Duel and the Daytona 500.

Starting alongside Kenseth is 2008 Daytona 500 champion Ryan Newman (192.353) with Kasey Kahne (192,291), Greg Biffle (192.139) and Jeff Gordon (192.061) rounding out the top five. Newman’s Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Tony Stewart had initially qualified second, but his No. 14 Office Depot Chevrolet failed inspection and his time was disallowed.

RFR was successful in the NASCAR Nationwide Series as well with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. netting his first pole at Daytona International Speedway with a fast lap of 177.253 mph. Joining the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford on the front row for Friday night’s Subway Jalapeno 250 Powered By Coca-Cola was Cole Whitt (177.092) with Danica Patrick (177.012) taking third.

Austin Dillon was declared the pole-winner at the conclusion of qualifying, but the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet failed inspection and his time was disallowed.

DAYTONA BEACH, FL & CHEVY CHASE, MD – Daytona International Speedway is known across the globe as the home of “The Great American Race,” the DAYTONA 500®.  During this year’s Speedweeks, it also hosted the Travel Channel’s original series “Sand Masters,” which follows a group of sand masons as they travel the world creating unimaginable sand masterpieces on a massive scale.  Not only do they build colossal works of sand that defy gravity, but they battle challenges of unpredictable weather, wildly ambitious designs, demanding clients and a ticking clock along the way.

In this all-new half-hour special, premiering on Travel Channel on Sunday, July 8 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, the sand masters are invited to Daytona by two-time DAYTONA 500 Champion Michael Waltrip.  To honor his brother Darrell’s induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Michael requests the sand masters to create a surprise race-inspired sand sculpture.  After strapping in for a heart-pounding 170 MPH spin around the famed high banks Daytona International Speedway, the team is motivated and pumped to create their new sand structure.

Their inspiration, however, is quickly tested when the sand masters must work amid the constant, thunderous roar of the engines, face soggy sand and salvage a collapsed portion of their specially-designed masterpiece, which features Darrell's No. 17 car, the old Winston Cup trophy, a checkered flag, a banked track and a giant sand statue of Darrell doing the “Ickey Shuffle” after his 1989 DAYTONA 500 victory.

“The ‘Sand Masters’ NASCAR episode highlights the incredible skill of these sand experts,” said Andy Singer, General Manager, Travel Channel.  “Not only do they overcome obstacles to build a challenging sand monument, but they help celebrate Americana with the famous DAYTONA 500 race.”

During the special “Sand Masters” episode, the network will conduct a “Watch and Win” Twitter contest, where fans will be prompted to tweet a special hashtag to @travelchannel for a chance to win NASCAR prizes including Michael Waltrip autographed items and even two tickets to the 2013 DAYTONA 500.

“Sand Masters” is produced by Painless Entertainment for Travel Channel.  For Painless Entertainment, the executive producer is Jim Casey.  For Travel Channel, the executive producer is David E. Gerber.
