Ryan Lochte
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Ryan Lochte, three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer and Daytona Beach native, will serve as Grand Marshal for the first of two Gatorade Duel At Daytona 150-mile qualifying races on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Daytona International Speedway.

Lochte, who won his first gold at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and two more at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, will deliver the starting command “Drivers, start your engines” to begin the first Gatorade Duel.

Including his three gold medals, Lochte is a 12-time Olympic and World medalist. He currently holds the world record in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay as part of the American team and the world record for both the 200-meter and the 400-meter individual medley.

Lochte’s other career highlights include being named the 2010 FINA Male Swimmer of the Year, USA Swimming’s 2009 Male Athlete of the Year and  winning a total of 57 medals spanning the Olympics, World, Pan American, and Pan Pacific Championships.

“We are looking forward to welcoming one of Daytona Beach’s most decorated athletes as Grand Marshal for the first Gatorade Duel,” said Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III. “His achievements are inspiring to those around the world and are great point of pride in the Daytona Beach community.  We are honored to have him play an integral part in the Gatorade Duel.”

Raised in Daytona Beach by parents that were swimmers, Lochte is a graduate of nearby Spruce Creek High School and the University of Florida, where competed under the direction of Coach Gregg Troy and was the NCAA Swimmer of the Year twice, a seven-time NCAA champion and a seven-time Southeastern Conference champion.

Aside from swimming, Lochte is very committed to charity outreach. He supports Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy and lobbied for the passing of the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Care Act, which was signed by President George W. Bush. He is also the spokesperson for the Mac Crutchfield Fund, a local charity that provides scholarships to the Special Olympics community in memory of the 12-year-old swimmer that drowned during Tropical Storm Faye.

The Gatorade Duel At Daytona features two 150-mile, 60-lap races that will finalize the starting lineup for NASCAR’s most prestigious race – the 54th annual Daytona 500.

Feb 14 | From the Beaches to the High Banks: 2011 Daytona 500 Champion Trevor Bayne to Participate in a Special Procession to Kick Off the Stock-Car Portion of Speedweeks

SHARE

2011 Daytona 500 Champion Trevor Bayne will kick off the stock car portion of Speedweeks 2012 on Friday, Feb. 17 by driving his No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford through the streets of eastern Volusia County to historic Daytona International Speedway

2011 Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – 2011 Daytona 500 Champion Trevor Bayne will kick off the stock car portion of Speedweeks 2012 on Friday, Feb. 17 by driving his No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford through the streets of eastern Volusia County to historic Daytona International Speedway where he will defend his victory in the “Great American Race.”

Escorted by the 2012 Toyota Camry Daytona 500 Pace Car, Bayne will begin his drive on A1A south of Dunlawton Avenue at 11:15 a.m. He will travel North along A1A before heading west on International Speedway Blvd. to NASCAR Way.  He will enter Daytona International Speedway at Gate 7 and cross the start/finish line brandishing a large green flag.

“We encourage the local community to come out and cheer on Trevor Bayne as he drives along A1A and International Speedway Boulevard toward ‘The World Center of Racing’ to defend his Daytona 500 victory,” Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III said. “We would like to extend our thanks to Volusia County officials starting with County Council Chair Frank Bruno, officials from the cities of Ponce Inlet, Daytona Beach Shores and Daytona Beach, and all the local law enforcement agencies and other officials for their assistance with this unique event that showcases the rich racing tradition of our area.”

At the age of 20, Bayne became the youngest champion of the Daytona 500 in 2011. On Sunday, Feb. 26, he will attempt to become the first repeat champion of the Daytona 500 since Sterling Marlin back in 1994-95.

NASCAR-sanctioned automobile racing was held on the famous beach road course from 1948 through 1958.  Vehicles racing on the 4.1-mile beach road course would travel north on the hard packed sand beach, turning left through the banked sand North Turn and then travel south on the two-lane paved Atlantic Avenue until they reached the start/finish line at the banked sand South Turn, thus completing one lap.

Tickets for the 54th annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 26 as well as other Speedweeks 2012 events can be purchased online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP
