Superstock Qualifying
Pole winner Aaron Yates, No. 20 Jordan Suzuki during news conference
“The track is pretty decent right now, it seems kind of green. Maybe it’s just me. We went good this morning on our first session out, then we tried some different tires in the qualifying session-- a little harder compound front, a different rear. We got up and went along pretty well in the low 39’s in what we feel like is our race set up. We really want to make a few adjustments and try to improve on that but Dunlop had a couple of qualifying tires to try and we started throwing those at the bike. I believe I went the fastest with the first tire we stuck in -- it was hooked up. We went fast and got the pole position time on that.

“We had a couple more tires we stuck in there but I was never able to have the confidence in them like I did with the first one. The tires weren’t in too good of shape after that hot lap. It was a little difficult to get around the track on the way in for the in lap and kind of killed my confidence in the tire. It was hard to really push hard on that qualifying lap. I’ve never been much of a qualifying tire kind of guy. We spent 20 minutes playing around with that. I would’ve rather been tuning on the bike with the race set up to make it better.

“I expect it to be kind of short-- a 13-lap race it looks like. We’re gonna have to go out there and go strong from the beginning to the finish. Hopefully we get some clear track and we can have some smooth sailing out there. The Jordan Suzuki team is working really well together and the Dunlop tires are getting around the track well. Hopefully I can go out there and put my head down and try to bring one home for the team.”

“It felt pretty good. It could be a little bit better I think. We got hung up in just qualifying and going after that point in qualifying. Dunlop had a couple of tires to try. We spent the session doing that. We could’ve worked on the chassis just a little bit I think. Hopefully tomorrow we can do a couple of things and help get the bike turned around in a couple of areas. I think on race tires we’re looking pretty good. We’re a bit faster than the other guys I think. It’s a great way to start the season off especially for Jordan Suzuki having a first and second right off in the first race in qualifying. Hopefully we can take it on through the race.”

Geoff May, rider No. 99 Jordan Suzuki
“I guess I’ll give Aaron those five hundredths or whatever it was. He has got a year more on the team. I’m happy with my performance. The Dunlop tires are unbelievable. I’m having a ball. It’s like starting racing all over again when I was a beginner privateer. It’s really fun. I love being at Daytona and the sunshine.

“We thought we would be in the 37s. I think it got hotter than we anticipated. We didn’t have a good first practice this morning. We’re a little bit behind. I’m happy with second. I can’t complain to be right there with my teammate.”

Blake Young, rider No. 79 M4 EMGO Suzuki
“It went pretty good except for that last little bit there. We ended up putting the bike on the ground which we never like to do. We were really trying to push the envelope and really push my Pirelli tires and see how far they can go. The bikes are coming around. They are doing really good. Every time we hit the track, we go faster and faster so you can’t complain. I’m really happy with the new crew this year and the bikes. Everything is really going great for me.”
