Fresh From Florida 200 KONI Challenge Series Post-Race Quotes
TIM TRAVER (No. 83 BGB Porsche 997) “The team was awesome today. What can I say about Craig Stanton as a co-driver? It was amazing. Flawless pit stops, flawless strategy. It was just perfect.” SCOTT MAXWELL (No. 55 Hyper Sport Ford Mustang GT) “It was pretty hectic the last few laps. I was making a lot of mistakes out there. I went off once. But the Hyper Sport Mustang was so good, we just ran out of time running down the Porsche. I had a lot of fun. These KONI Challenge races are always a blast, and I love Daytona. I’ve won here, and almost won again last year, but I guess we’re second best again. It’s a good start to the year, something to build on. We’re after a championship, and you have to put the points on the board.” JOE FOSTER (No. 55 Hyper Sport Ford Mustang GT) “It was a great race. This first race of the year is a dual-class race and it’s three hours long, so we had an opportunity to use some strategy. Jeff Courtney did a great opening stint, I did an hour, 20 minutes in the middle and Scott batted cleanup and did a great job. We’re all happy. I’m happy for Patrick (Dempsey) and Rick (Skelton), the team owners, and for Hyper Sport and for Ford. We had a great time.” PATRICK DEMPSEY I’m real happy for the team. It’s a great way to start the weekend and get momentum going into the Rolex 24. I’m really proud of the team, coming in real strong to start the season. Everyone drove real strong, real smart. Joe drove with a lot of heart today. It was an emotional drive for him and it was great to see. (Thoughts on tomorrow’s race) “Charles (Espenlaub) was in the top 10 too, he finished well up there. We’re going to have to stay out of trouble, be real consistent and see what happens. It’s a long race. This is a great way to start the weekend. We¹ll build on this, hopefully.” TERRY BORCHELLER (No. 3 Blackforest Motorsports Ford Mustang) “It was just good, clean racing. I really had a lot of fun. I know Scott (Maxwell) well, I’ve run with him a lot. I trust him. And I think Jeff Segal was in the BMW (he was) and I know him pretty well and I trust him. I had my hands full with him in the infield. But our Mustang had a little power on the top over him. It was a good race. Great fun, great series.” STREET TUNER NICK WITTMER (No. 31 i-MOTO Racing Acura TSX) “I was fourth when I got in. Glenn Bocchino held up the car perfectly throughout his stint, an hour and a half. We did not want to come in before an hour and a half. Because of that, we did one pit stop. Everybody else did two, I believe, and we were one lap ahead because of that one pit stop. From there we just maintained and brought it home. The Cobalt Friction Brakes were amazing. They held up 110 percent all the way and that’s what brought us home. Big brother won the pole, but I took down the race.” GLENN BOCCHINO (No. 31 i-MOTO Racing Acura TSX) “It was a great race. The car was fantastic. The crew was fantastic. Everything was fantastic. Everything worked perfectly. You couldn’t ask for a better race. We got a lot of luck on our pit strategy, and that’s what put us ahead of these guys (the 32 car). This is my first win in Grand-Am, and it’s Nick’s second.” KUNO WITTMER (No. 32 i-MOTO Racing Acura TSX) “The race was just awesome. We had a little issue at the beginning with a stuck gas pedal going into corner one at the start, that’s why I fell to fifth. Apart from that, the car just hacked away at those times, and it¹s all thanks to Cobalt Friction Brakes. My teammate Peter Cunningham came from 13th to second place, he did a flawless job.” PETER CUNNINGHAM (No. 32 i-MOTO Racing Acura TSX) “We did it the hard way. We had a good strategy, not a great strategy, because we went a lap down. We had a chance to stay on the lead lap with our other car, but it didn’t work out that way, because we didn’t get enough of a gap. We knew at that point we were racing with the one-lap down crowd, and the best we could do was second. We didn’t think that would happen, but we kept the pressure on and went, went, went. I had some real great racing all the way to the end. I’m proud of this whole team.” KARL THOMPSON (No. 76 Compass360 Racing Acura TSX) “As usual, the guys at the Compass360 Racing shop put together a great car for us. I had a real good first stint. On the first lap, there was a backup in the left hand lane, and Toby (Grahovec) and I in the right-hand lane got to take off, I went from sixth to second in the first corner. From there, we worked together and were able to give our co-drivers good cars to go to the fight to the end.” TRAVIS WALKER (No. 76 Compass360 Racing Acura TSX) “It was good. Compass360 and the TSX were phenomenal, as always. They never let me down. It was a great honor to race with Peter Cunningham. I’ve watched him over the years, I’ve watched him when I was a little kid when I was watching go-karting. It was an honor to duke it out with him, trade a little paint. I made a great move on him to take second, and a GS car got in the way. That¹s the great thing about Grand-Am, it adds variety and adds excitement. Karl and I are very excited. We are finally on the box."
