AMA Superbike Opening Round Quotes
Mat Mladin, No. 6 Yoshimura Suzuki “I got a good start and I put my head down. It was a very good start. Tommy (Hayden) was just on the outside of me. I tried to get into the corner reasonably deep to get the lead. I knew he had a real good motorcycle today. We could run some fairly good lap times if we got clean air. So it was good to get in turn one first and put our head down. I did what I had to do.” On hitting a bird on the last lap “On the last lap, literally the checkered flag was in sight, and the next thing there was a quick flash.” Ben Spies, No. 1 Yoshimura Suzuki “It was a pretty good race for us. We didn¹t get off the line, obviously, like we would have liked to. I got up into second, and it took a little bit to get the rhythm down. Besides the bad start, I made one little mistake the whole race. That’s about it. I was pretty happy with how I rode. It’s happened so many times before, but usually when one of us gets out there, it’s very hard to do anything with it. We could kind of match times, we were a little bit off for a lap or a little bit quicker, but I wasn’t really reeling anyone in at that pace. I just tried to stay close in case something happened. It didn’t work out. But, second was the best we could do today. It was a reasonably good race for us.” Jason DiSalvo, No. 40 Yamaha “It was a great race. I got a really good start from fourth. I was unsure, coming from the outside like we were on the front row, but I got a good launch and got around the outside of Tommy coming through turn one. We kind of followed through for the little switchback coming into the horseshoe, and I found myself behind Mat. I kept my head down the whole race. We tried to tag on to those guys as much as I could. Ben came and passed me, he pulled me along a little bit and gave me a little gap over Hacking. I want to thank the crew, they’ve worked real hard to bring this bike to the next level. I’m looking forward to finding some more speed. I’m happy to be up on the podium. It’s good to be back.”
